Thames River, London
The Thames River in London is the most important river in England and the main source of London’s water supply.
Avon River, Bidford-on-Avon
The Upper Avon River flows through central England for 154 km (96 mi). Here, a barge passes Bidford-on-Avon.
Alum Bay, Isle of Wight
The Isle of Wight lies in the English Channel, off England’s southern coast, and is noted for its mild, sunny climate. The multicolored cliffs of Alum Bay and the Needles formation are part of the chalk uplands that run across the island.

Edinburgh, Scotland
Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland and its second largest city. The view here is of the city with the hills south of the Firth of Forth.
City Hall, Belfast
Belfast is the capital and largest city of Northern Ireland. The city is also an important manufacturing center, famous for its shipbuilding and textile industries. The majestic City Hall building, shown here, is a landmark located in Donegall Square in the center of Belfast.
Anglican Cathedral
Anglican Cathedral in Liverpool, England, is the largest Anglican cathedral in the world. It was designed by British architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott and completed in 1978. Construction took nearly 75 years due to two world wars and rising costs.
Cambridge University, Cambridge, England
Founded in the 13th century, Cambridge University is one of the oldest educational institutions in Europe and one of the most prestigious universities in the world. Among its many distinguished graduates are Charles Darwin, John Maynard Keynes, Oliver Cromwell, and John Milton.
Eton College
Eton College is a private secondary school in Berkshire County in southern England. The preparatory school was founded by King Henry VI in 1440. A statue of Henry VI stands in the courtyard of the college.
Oxford Graduation
Students at the University of Oxford in Oxford, England, prepare to receive their academic degrees. The sashes of their gowns are lined with different colors of silk, designating each student’s respective college or field of study. The music is by English composer Edward Elgar. It is the first of Elgar’s five Pomp and Circumstance marches, a work that is played at many graduation ceremonies.
Bridges in Newcastle upon Tyne
Newcastle upon Tyne in northeast England dates back to Roman times when it was the site of a Roman fort. It has flourished as an exporter of coal since the Middle Ages, and in the 19th century the city was a major shipyard and steel-production center. In the 20th century it became an important industrial, commercial, and transport city. The 1876 swing bridge, foreground, and the modern Tyne Bridge span the River Tyne in this ancient city.
Victoria Station, London
Victoria Station connects Belgravia and Victoria with Westminster and is London’s second busiest rail terminal.
Buckingham Palace
Buckingham Palace in Westminster is the official London residence of the British sovereign. Its interior, open to the public during August and September while the queen is on vacation, contains many elegantly furnished apartments and noted collections of paintings. Funds raised from the summer visits go toward repairing Windsor Castle, a royal residence located just outside of London that was damaged by fire in 1992.
Houses of Parliament, London
The city of London is the capital of the United Kingdom and the seat of government. Parliament, seen here, consists of the House of Lords and the House of Commons. Built between 1840 and 1850, the neo-Gothic complex of buildings is officially called the New Palace of Westminster.
