Boasting
The British think that Americans are boastful. There is perhaps some truth in this because America is a big country full of big things and Americans are proud of them.
On one occasion an American boy visited an English school as an exchange student. He was looked after by Alec, an English schoolboy.
Alec took him around London and showed him the sights.
"That's Buckingham Palace," he said, pointing to the building. "It's where the Queen lives and it took three years to build."
"That's nothing," the American boy said. "The White House, where the President lives, is bigger than that and took only two years to build."
Then they came to a large church.
"That's the most important church in London," Alec said. "Westminster Abbey. It took ten years to build."
"Back home," the American boy said, "St. Patrick's Cathedral, which is much grander than that, took only nine years to build."
Finally, they came to the famous Tower Bridge. It was being opened to let a ship through.
The American boy was at last impressed.
"What's that?" he demanded.
Alec decided to get his revenge.
"I don't know," he said. "It wasn't there when I came this way this morning."
